Return to Port-Au-Prince

We spent the day traveling back to PAP today. We left our wonderful hosts and home in Port-de-Paix.  We were able to get to the cathedral briefiy and see that the old structure has been entirely removed. We ran into Pere Jean Nesly Aïs who was picking up his daughter from the music school. This was a great surprise. We met some acolytes who gave us a tour of the cathedral as they were preparing for a festival day tomorrow.

After reflections and some prayers we all are ready to go back to our other home in Boston tomorrow.

A lovely visit to la Tortue

My images haven't been loading while writing this blog. So I will share more when I get to wifi.

Today we journey via rustic sailboat to la Tortue to visit St. Aidens mission and school. We encountered some rain and waves which always feels kind of unsafe but these trips are made many times a day 365 days a year.

During our trip over we learned Creole and taught English on the boat with the other passengers. One young woman taught scripture for her Roman Catholic Church and school.

When we arrived we met the students of St. Aiden and we toured the clinic and the classrooms. The island mission is in need to of substantial repair and renewal.  They are in need of teachers salaries and safer classrooms. The estimate for a renewal of la Tortue community would be about double the cost of renewal for Morne Rosette.  About $200-$250 thousand dollars.   The extra costs would be for transporting the materials across the ocean and for bringing them up the mountain top.

It was lovely to see Leonard Stimphil, and see Markson the leader of the youth.

We concluded our day with our sail home, with another rain storm en route but lots of good singing on the boat in Creole.

When returning to Port-de-paix we had a lovely dinner, Friday night worship and a tour of the computer lab.

The perspective such a visit gives me is always restorative for my faith and hope that we can work together in Christ and grow.

Morse Rosette

We were delighted to see the dramatic changes at Morne Rosette after the Cambell Hall school made sufficient donations to repair and build new classrooms, a new kitchen and cafeteria and a new sanitary clock and soon to be built basketball court.  We planned to go to La Tortue but the weather was iffy.  We will see if tomorrow we can visit La Tortue.

Pere Wilky and the congregation has done a beautiful job with the dramatic transformation even improving the church building.

Becuase it is the rainy season we could see vegetation, crops and fruits growing more than during previous trips.

Maggie and Sarah with Mirlande's help interview some women from Port-de-paix who had received the days for girls kits and heard about their experience.  We closed our day with a delicious dinner and a long conversation about our partnership with Pere Wilky, Guerlins Valcy and Eveline the warden.  Lastly, we closed with prayers for the day.

Goodnight.

Holy innocents

We toured the school today and saw the children. The school has made some important improvements with a water filtration system powerred by solar panels, beginning improvements on a cafeteria and renovating some classrooms.

we have been delighted to meet Pere Wilky who is passionate about his work and ministry and loves preaching and seeing progress in the congregation and school.

We plan to visit La Tortue tomorrow depending upon the weather.   I am grateful to see the school thriving.

When photos are able to be uploaded I will try.
