Mission Trip

When our youth get confirmed in 10th grade, St. Paul’s sends them on a mission trip. This custom is long standing in our community and is a fantastic way for our youth to put what they have learned into practice. In the summer of 2015, our 10th, 11th, and 12th graders went on a week long mission trip in New Orleans to rebuild houses still impacted from Hurricane Katrina. This trip was made possible by a year full of talent shows, raffles, sales, and triathlons to raise money. Once we arrived, we toured parts of New Orleans and worked hard to get as much work done as we could.

We are looking to go on another mission trip in the summer of 2016 and are reviewing locations at this moment. Please check back to see where we are going and how you can support this wonderful work.

Shrove Tuesday

Sherrill Hall

On the Tuesday night before Ash Wednesday, the St. Paul’s Youth put on a Pancake Supper (also known at Strove Tuesday). We decorate the parish hall like Mardi Gras, put on some good music, and eat pancakes and ham. We ask people to donate money for the SPY mission trip.

After dinner there is a quick service to get us ready for the start of Lent. Come support our youth group and get ready for this special time in the Christian faith.

High School Retreat

Held at the Barbara C. Harris Camp & Conference Center and elsewhere, these gatherings–led by the Diocesan Youth Council members–give young people and their allies an opportunity to get away with each other, meet others from around the diocese, and listen together for God’s outrageous plans for them through games and activities, reflections, food, fun, and lively worship.

Middle School Retreat

Come enjoy the beautiful fall at our the Barbara C. Harris Camp, and meet young people and adults from all over the diocese! We will have small group workshops, indoor and outdoor games, worship that gets you both moving and thinking, the LIVE band The Spark, and above all, time away from the stress of everyday life, so that we can pay a little more attention to the Spirit of God!

Adult mentors will also have the opportunity to take part in a program on “Engaging Young People in Word and Worship”.  Whether you are a professional youth worker, or this is your first doing this work, this is a wonderful opportunity to develop skills that will help improve your parish ministry. If you can’t attend the retreat, but would just like to come for the day to participate in this free training, please email Mark (hmsmith@diomass.org).

Know that we don’t want ANYTHING to stand in the way of youth taking part in this weekend.

  • If money is an issue for youth or adults, scholarships are available.
  • If you can’t find an adult chaperone, we will work with you to find supervision .

Speakers and Youth Liturgies

YOUTH LITURGIES

SPY has around 4 youth liturgies during a program year. They are services made and led by the youth for the youth. These liturgies occur before or after SPY parties or when speakers have come in to engage with the youth.

Each service is held in the Chapel that is directly off of Sherrill Hall. If your youth would like to help plan the next youth liturgy, please have them contact Kate McKey-Dunar at katemckey.stpauls@gmail.com.

SPEAKERS

Every year, we try to bring in one or two speakers to share with our youth. Last year we had:

  •  Rev. Paige Fisher engaged our youth in a talk on generosity. We met in Sherrill Hall at 4pm for pizza and then Rev. Paige lead our discussion and activities. We ended in the Chapel with a youth liturgy.
  • Rev. Philip Kutta came to speak to us about his life and transition from growing up in Tanzania to moving to America. He spoke about the challenges he faced and how God has been with him. We finished with a youth liturgy led by Rev. Kutta.
