The Whitney Plantation

Our Sunday afternoon included a tour of the Whitney plantation the only plantation fully dedicated as a museum in witness to slavery. This devastating truth of our American and world history, as an injury to human dignity, and treating people as property is part of our grievous economic foundation.

Visit to the 9th ward

After church we toured the lower ninth ward and saw still the aftermath of Katrina. A man from the neighborhood spoke about the feelings of loss of neighborhood and friendships that have gone because so many haven't been able to rebuild their homes after Katrina.  What was a dynamic neighborhood where everyone knew everyone, now there were overgrown lots and streets with weeds overtaking them.  The rebuilt areas included homes that were restored with the help of volunteers and charities, including Brad Pitt's Make it Right foundation and the Marsalis family' support of jazz musicians.

Sunday

We joined St. Anna's Episcopal Church on Sunday and we're grateful to hear a compelling sermon by Fr. Bill Terry on the embrace of Jesus' ministry for all which upset the order of life for many and caused division in its inclusion.  The people welcomed us warmly and the music was joyful and eclectic within a higher church setting.  Following the service there was a conversation about creating sanctuary at St. Anna's and how to support immingrant families at risk of being separated or detained by Immigration control.

Harry Potter VBS week!

This week marks the Order of the Phoenix uniting with the 12 disciples for some fun reflection on Scripture and Harry Potter. Our campers and CITs are having a fantastic week with Defense against the Dark Arts discovering the meaning of baptism, blessings, potion-making, magical sounds with Gigi, herbology and more. Thanks to Beth Folsom's amazing organizing of our week.
